Tweakers – how to get the most out of your research

Tweakers at Happy Labs

Tweakers has been coming to our lab for years. We conduct Concept Tests and UX Tests for them. What makes the collaboration so successful? It comes down to two things: the pragmatic approach and the involvement from Tweakers.

We don't make it bigger than necessary

In a typical UX Test or Concept Test, we handle everything: preparation, recruitment, interviews, reporting. As a client, all you have to do is show up to observe the interviews. Afterwards, we share a report with concrete advice you can immediately act on. But it's not always like that. Sometimes you have limited resources, which means we have to approach your research more pragmatically. The question then is: how can we test as well as possible within the means we have? With Tweakers, we have found the perfect answer to that question.

'You get the most out of your research if you are truly involved – we see that time and again.'

We always do the research together. That starts with recruitment. Tweakers places a banner on their site – this helps us quickly find the right target audience. From there, we take over. We schedule the interviews. On the research day itself, we sit together with the Tweakers team in the lab. We conduct the interviews, they observe attentively. They take notes. At the end of the day, we go through what we have seen. We never deliver a report – Tweakers does that themselves. We love these kinds of collaborations, the interaction. You get the most out of your research if you are truly involved – we see that time and again.

Sometimes a Concept Test, sometimes a UX Test

We conduct different types of research for Tweakers. We often test a new concept, a new feature. The ideas for these new concepts come from all angles: from the business, from the team itself, or from members of the Tweakers community. We present Figma prototypes to the target audience to discover how it lands. Does this idea work, or does it not? By testing concepts, we ensure that Tweakers can make smart, strategic choices. We also sometimes test the live site. In that case, we conduct a UX Test to discover where the experience can be improved. How do you determine which type of research is best? That depends entirely on your research question and the test material.

'Besides the fact that it's extremely important to do these kinds of tests, working together with Valsplat/Happy Labs is also just a lot of fun.'

– Sander den Heijer, Product Lead at Tweakers
