1. Designing for the wrong generation
When designing your website or app, it’s important to have a clear idea about the generation of your audience. In the rapidly expanding technological world, it is essential that your users are served with the best user experience. So what do they expect from the technology and interface? Different age groups have diverse demands. Baby boomers will expect technology that helps them to get stuff done, but generation X and especially millennials demand a lot more.
The best way to tackle this, is to make sure you know for which generation you are designing your product and test it with the right generation. You can only think for your own generation and not for the other. With these results, you can make sure every generation has a good user experience.
2. Ignoring multi-screen behaviour
Nowadays, a lot of people are browsing websites from mobile phones and tablets and are switching more and more between screens. They are viewing something on their laptop, while also looking at something else on their smartphone. Yet a lot of organizations are still only focused on the online design for the desktop. This is a real waste, because it’s important that your product has a good responsiveness, whether it is on a smartphone, tablet or desktop.
Responsive design on mobile devices is a must these days and if your website is not responsive, people will find your website broken and that will leave your site with bad user experience. The best way to fix this is to make sure you test your design on every screen. Make sure you don’t just copy the interface from the desktop, but you make a design for every kind of screen.
3. Too much text
Research shows that 55% of the website visitors spend less than 15 seconds on a webpage. The majority of web users just have a quick glance through the most important points and bold texts of the website. If you add too much text on your website, most of your users won’t bother to read it. So, less is more! As long as you can get the right message to your audience, you don’t even need that much text. And besides, people like visuals.
It’s really easy to fix this. When you are designing your site or product, just keep in mind that visuals work way better than text. Try to limit the amount of text you use. And if you want to tell a story, think about making a video or an infographic!
4. Putting too much attention to creativity and not enough on usability
A good thing to remember: creativity is the core of the product, but usability is the soul of the product! Yes, it’s important that your site or product is well designed and looks good, but if you ignore the usability, users will not appreciate the product and will abandon it. This has a lot to do with the user experience. If the complex interactive way makes it difficult for users to get the right information, the user experience will be bad and there is a big chance that users will not visit or use your site ever again.
How to fix this? Don’t over design your product. It’s good when the site or product looks good and has a fancy design, but usability will always come on the first place. Your users have to enjoy using your product and should have easy access to the information they are looking for.
5. Lack of user testing
We’ve saved the best and most important mistake for last: lack of user testing. With all the examples above, there is one way to fix them all: conduct a user test. User testing will not only save you a lot time, but also a lot of money. For example: after a lot of people updated their iPhone to iOS 7, the users got in a lot of trouble with the keyboard. They could’ve avoided this problem if they did a user test.
With this test you can get more information about whether the user can successfully obtain information, if the navigation mechanism is efficient and the weight of information is reasonable.
